What this tool does
SMS is the one channel that still works in a basement car park, on a rural road, and on a phone with no data plan. That is the whole argument for an SMS code: it is not the modern option, it is the one that does not need the internet to work.
At a glance
| Encodes | An SMSTO link: one number plus an optional draft message |
|---|---|
| What happens on scan | The messaging app opens with the message drafted. Nothing sends until the person taps send |
| Cost | Free, no limits on how many you make |
| Sign-up | None. No account, no email address |
| You download | PNG (high resolution) and SVG (vector) |
| Where it runs | Entirely in your browser. Nothing is uploaded |
| Code type | Static — the content lives inside the image |
| Editable after printing | No. Change the content and you get a new code |
| Scan tracking | No. There is no server in the path to count a scan |
How it works
Enter your details
Enter the number that should receive the message, and the text to pre-fill.
Style it, and keep it scannable
Pick colours, module and eye shapes, a gradient, a frame, or drop your logo in the middle. The preview updates as you type and the timing patterns stay square, which is what keeps it readable.
Download and print
Take a high-resolution PNG or a vector SVG. Free, no sign-up, no watermark, and the file is yours.
Good to know
- This writes the SMSTO: format, which both iOS and Android understand. The shorter sms:?body= form is read by iPhones and ignored by several Android camera apps.
- Standard message rates apply to whoever scans, and an international number can be expensive to text. Use a local or short number if the audience is local.
- Keep the pre-filled text short. It is a draft the sender can edit, and a long one just gets deleted before sending.
- This is a static QR code: your content is encoded into the image itself, so nothing is stored on our servers and the code never expires — but its destination is fixed once you print it.
- Everything runs in your browser. What you type is never uploaded, which is also why there are no scan statistics on these codes: there is no server in the path to count anything.

A dynamic Qrindo code keeps the same printed image but lets you re-point it any time and tracks every scan, geo, device, and live.
Frequently asked questions
Does an SMS QR code send the message by itself?
No, and no code from anyone can. It opens the messaging app with the number and text filled in; the person still presses send. Phones deliberately refuse to send a message a scanned code composed.
Can I use a short code or a five-digit number?
Yes, and it is usually the better choice for a campaign. Enter it exactly as customers would dial it, with no country code, since short codes are not internationally routable.
Why is SMS better than a link for some campaigns?
Because it works with no data connection and it gives you the sender’s number, which a page visit does not. The trade-off is that you learn nothing until they actually send, and many will not.
Does scanning an SMS QR code send the message automatically?
No, and it must not. The code only opens the messaging app with the number and text filled in. The person still has to press send, which is what keeps it from being abused.
Will the person be charged for the text?
At their normal SMS rate, yes — this is an ordinary text from their own number. Say so on the sign if you are asking people to text a shortcode, because those can cost considerably more.
Do all phones support SMSTO codes?
Current iPhones and Android phones do. A handful of older readers only understand the older SMS: form and will show the raw text instead of opening the app — worth a test scan on an old handset if your audience has them.
